Let us experience it: Instagram sucks for artists, and it’s sucked for a lengthy time. But, the fantastic information is that if you dislike it, you can often go away. I still left a couple months back, and I regret *almost nothing* about the conclusion!
Youtube is a a lot greater system in so numerous ways, and as an oil painter, the stress to regularly have new written content 5-7x/week on IG was as well unsustainable for me to bear. On Youtube, I can publish art vlogs, materials evaluations, portray course of action films, and these a huge wide range of content material that I never ever get weary, and my material calendar isn’t reliant on my portray schedule.
If you happen to be emotion burnt out and exhausted of doing the job versus Instagram’s demanding algorithm, think about doing what I did, and begin a youtube channel instead.

Hi there 😀 Thanks for that video. I think you are really likeable. Recently I thought about the stress of instragram too. It hasn't done for me any good, with exceptions of course. I will start a whole new project a fantasy novel, that I will illustrate in any way. Now I search a good place to start and share my way through this project. My problem with the whole video thing is, that first I'm german (speaking english for reaching out to the english speaking world, isn't impossible but there still is these threshold to overcome … and second… I stutter a little bit and really don't like listening to myself. 😉 I like to watch youtube videos of artists, but I don't know, if it's the right thing for me. What else plattformes do you use?
Greetings form good old Germany.

Thank you so kuch for sharing your experience with Instagram (gag 😫) Kelsey. You inspired me to drop them for good. Yay! Instagram wants people to post for Instagram. All they want is to grow their numbers & $$$ so they continuously imitate Snapchat and tiktok. This company has no integrity or creativity. They favor popular influencers yet ban certain users without giving any explanation. I will quit instagram. This marketing media is not worth my precious time, definitely not to grow my brand.
I've been so discouraged with my artwork and not getting the response I need from IG has killed my artist drive to create more content and to keep going. I put a lot of work into my art and trying to make posts daily whole having a job is time consuming. I would have to do all of this work just to only get 5 likes.
I've always felt the ig platform wasn't really for artist, you're forced to be in a certain dimension and there's no zooming in and out.
it was always a strange platform.
yet im not really into video editing, I just want to post my illustrations and move on. trying to wrap my head around making a video it seems more time consuming
IG allows songs, and people to say the " n" word, all the time. But.. type it in, and the ig police notify you ,that you may get canned.
You're a life saver!!! I have over 1,000 followers on Instagram and I feel like to constantly post or my page will die. Sometimes I force myself to draw or stay up late so I would have any content to post (I upload once in 3-4 days). Yesterday However my drawing got only 60 likes and it usually get 120-150 likes. Also I get a crazy number of unfollows recently. I tried to figure out what's wrong with my art and when I think about it, there was nothing wrong, it's the algorithm of Instagram that sucked all of my joy from creating arts. Thank you so much for posting this video, today I'll leave Instagram for the better and I already feel so much better knowing I'm free from now!
Love what you had to say here. I am just starting out on youtube AND instagram. Youtube suits me considerably more. Especially since I've got 2 pronged approach to my channel. One series is about gaming (tabletop rpgs) and illustration. The other series is shorter, and is about tabletop rpg gaming tips. So. thank you!!!
Thank you! You articulate perfectly how I’ve been feeling about IG and I am now motivated to continue editing videos and (hopefully) start sharing content on YT vs IG! Appreciate the insight!!
I love that you speak out on these issues. I have respect for people who speak out on these toxic apps. I just left instagram recently (my art account) and it's was exactly 💯 the same thing you talk about. Glad to have seen your channel on YouTube. Definitely gave me a wake up call.
Thanks; I won't waste my time!
I unknowingly let instagram determine my worth. I stopped creating as a result, feeling like everything I was doing was forced for the gram. I have deleted the app and only post when I feel like it. Now on YouTube and creating more tutorial content and loving it. 100% relate to all the points you made here! X
I don't consider myself as a pro artist or anything jus yet but I have seen how Instagram algorithm is so aesthetic friendly and hardly values fine artists who pour their souls in making art pieces. Having said that I do get the point that its the people who manipulate the algorithms and then vice versa . I wish there were art specific platform where something like a figure drawing would not be banned because the sh*tty algorithm thinks it s not art…fu**ing stupid AI
ok i'll shut up 😃
I know you said it in a different video – feeling frustrated about having to create a certain type of content here on youtube, one that focuses on money making tips rather than the art you actually make. It's definitely disheartening but I guess there's still a silver lining to it too. I hope you get more traffic in general and more people who are actually curious about the art you make (which is gorgeous btw). But yeah, I only now started posting art "regularly" on Instagram and I'm already extremely disappointed and it seems like they don't really care about all those artists leaving the platform… I hope another, better alternative is created, where perhaps videos, or polished pieces are not a requirement.
Instagram doesn't seem at all suited for artists vs people that take photos which only takes a few seconds or minutes while for me it takes 8 hours or more total which means it takes multiple days. Thank you! This is a great video ! 🙂
I understand what you’re saying about instagram. I don’t like it either. It feels like a chore. Unfortunately I don’t think youtube is for me either – I have zero interest in video editing, plus I’m autistic and don’t like speaking to people like that, and my daily spoons are limited. The only reason I’m looking into social media is not for making money – my goal is to get some appreciation for what I make but more importantly to see what I make (the physical products) go to people who will want them. Etsy is exhausting and probably out of my reach with my fatigue problems. Local markets aren’t bad, but I still have lots of stuff left over I find that I don’t know what to do with – I hate to chuck things out. I thought of an idea where I have a patreon and supporters can get a box of what I have made recently if they pay postage but I don’t know how to build up a patreon without the chore of social media.
Anyway, your videos have got me thinking but I haven’t found the solution yet. Thanks though.
Instagram is complete trash.
I wholeheartedly agree with this video, thank you for the time and effort you put into it! I saved it so I can go back to it anytime I feel a bit down or burned out ♥️✨
Thanks for the insights. When I first started IG – it was VERY kool. I could reach 100 new people and engagements per post. Now? Pffft. Nothing. Your perspective on YouTube – as a long-term investment – makes much more sense! You are GREAT at it too 🙂
ive been here for 2 years and I'm really thinking of shifting from Instagram to youtube. I'm having such a hard time picking the right platform and you really helped
GET IT GIRL! Just found your channel and love your content. Great work creating multiple sources of income and finding a platform you love. 🙂
I breached having over 10k followers on instagram only to watch the platform die and my reach plumet to worse than when. I first started …. Been considering youtube for a while now. Think ill deff take that step now
i was literally working my ass off on Instagram after some time i got 28 followers and i went back there 2 goddamn days later and i had 26 fllws ig am running as far as possible from insta especially when i want to launch my very own art print business 😀
Thank you for your video! Instagram has been hard for me as well so I decided to unplug for 6 months and guess what: it has been great. Anyhow last week I logged in again under pressure of friends and saw the same posts i saw last year coming up- and i do not watch stories….it is a platform to actually just suck out energy and create content for the zuckerberg family and already famous people in order that the everyday people stays online instead of doing something concrete that gives real results. My brand didn't grow much with a whole year of fulltime work with an ssistant for it and all the views and likes didn't transform to any monetizing aspect instead it convinced me to advertise through insta which was the worst idea I ever came up with ! it is litterally throwing money out of the window…
Wonderful video about IG. I too love IG and use it mostly or should say only but will be building my presence on YouTube and other platforms for my art business. This also pertains to any business that is struggling on IG. Thanks again. And yes yes IG Is addicting to scroll through and watch but it turns to a brick wall eventually….
wow this really explains why i fell off instagram as an artist and it never quite clicked with me. I got so much more enjoyment making a webcomic on webcomic sites. I just cant handle the shallowness and the fakeness of instagram everything feels sooooo inauthentic and there are so.much.ad. it has this way of even making content and people with depth into something so surface level with incessant ads and how everything is presented and algorithms. everything feels so disposable there even people. i just dont have the same feeling on youtube cuz u can see authenticity and depth and personality and professionalism in peoples content.
i also found people who do well on instagram dont do really well on youtube sometimes cuz on instagram they were just all surface level but on youtube you need actual personality and something to say than like ooooh nice vacation or ooooh cute pic of me. like you actually need something to offer and be intersting on youtube
This is so encouraging! I have been feeling so discouraged but now I have some new inspiration/encouragement!
I've recently started watching all your videos and as a little art YouTuber who recently started posting, your videos are really helpful!! I'm realizing that is actually possible for me to use my platform to not only share my work and grow as an artist, but also eventually making money from it! So thank you so much!
I can't stop crying every time I post a new work on Instagram. I draw at the pro level, my drawings are juicy and beautiful, but no one sees my work. I haven't been able to gain an audience for three years.
Thanks for this information Kelsey! I've noticed a significantly large difference between posting on instagram versus TikTok and Youtube. I definitely get more views and feedback on the latter social media sites!
thank you for articulating my frustrations. instagram is so disappointing. great suggestion to switch to youtube. thank you!
I really enjoyed your video. I'm a music artist and I make relaxation music. A long time ago I tried Instagram and got really frustrated and ultimately quit. I thought I would try it again but after watching a lot of YouTube videos, I realized how much things had changed from a long time ago. And that's only been two years. I kept hearing that Instagram reels do really well, so I made a bunch of 30 second videos for them, only to get less than 10 views per freaking post. I'm like that's doing well?? lol. The process of exporting all these 30 second videos got really tiring really quick and I felt it was not worth the effort. So I tried posting a few pictures. The first picture only got a whopping 4 likes. The next 3 photos I posted got zero likes. Like Jesus Christ, fuck you Instagram! I also tried commenting and liking on other photos for 15 minutes a day, which isn't too terrible a process. But just the results overall of trying it for 2-3 weeks only got me a whopping 27 followers. People will un follow you too if you don't follow them back, and I didn't want to play the follow un follow game. The Instagram algorithm is constantly changing, it's so obnoxious. In 3 months it will be something different, and with all those features you have to constantly upload to.. It's just gross, idk how anyone can enjoy that bullshit. lol. So today I decided I didn't want to waste my time with it and deleted my account. I'm growing on other platforms that are much better for my music. Instagram just sucks and Facebook is an evil company in general I believe. I think it's awesome you're an oil painter too, just wanted to share my recent horrible experience. Haha. Definitely not worth the time or effort, Instagram marketing is just awful and it doesn't value its creators for shit.
When my random cloud time-lapse gets as many likes and views as a piece I spent hours painting…. 😅
Hi Kelsey! I couldn't agree more with you! I have been so frustrated with Instagram lately, there's always that pressure of posting as much as you can but then nobody seeing your posts and not really getting the results that I am looking after hours of creating, recording and editing. It is so frustrating to invest so much time working on something and then posting it and then feeling that instagram just does not want to show your post, not even to your current followers and then after of couple of days your work is just done and doesn't get any more reach. Also, the platform has become so toxic and it is really full of "tiktok" type shallow content! Thank you so much for this video because it really helped me realize that I am not alone with this Insta issue. I am now also one of your subscribers 🙂
so very true, I still post to my IG but I feel the slow growth is a massive pain. It's so helpful to hear it's not just me! I'm a part time artist still and so creating a constant stream of content to feed the IG monster is just not sustainable.
Thank you so much, your transparency and tip are incredibly helpful to me while I build up my strategy for getting my art earning me money
this is it, this is the video where i start my YT. Thanks for the push that i actually needed 😘😘✨✨✨
You totally nailed it Kelsey. Thanks for sharing this. Instagram feels toxic on both sides of the divide, and all the work you put in just gets washed away in the flood of content. They force creators to stick to their model, to their music, to their algorithm. Big hugs.
Thank you for this insight. As an artist I’ve felt the same way about IG but continued on using it for the sake of “having an online presence”, which is basically a bunch of creepy men & fake pages following me asking to pay for promo, the app is just blah now.. back in 2013 i loved it bc i love photos but that’s old news now.
I understand this, however as someone who is searching for inspiration or simply to look at art, I tend to do it there. Here I mainly search for tutorials and then end up getting to other videos, like this one here now:D
I will never take Youtubers seriously when they make videos about quitting Instagram while they still have active accounts on the platform. This all about gaining views on their Youtube channels. This world is sad and deceiving!
oh kelsey, I just found your channel! I'm so thankful for it. Thank you for all the advice, you're an inspiration. I recently started a youtube, instagram and tik tok and found my head spinning trying to grow on ig. It was really difficult, because I wasn't seeing any growth despite creating a painting a day. Now I'm back to focusing more on evergreen content on youtube and hopeful of the future.
As an artist I've never created a channel or a profile for my creations. I wanted to open an IG profile for my ilustrations, but after watching this video I'm not sure if it's a good idea anymore. I'm still at school and I work at the same time, I don't think I'm gonna be a le to post something new several times per week but I want to give some sight to my work.
Is YouTube the best option, then?
This is very relevant to me, I’m currently trying to use Instagram as a tool for growth and I’m definitely noticing how slow it is. Plus I love editing videos more than trying to make Instagram posts, the only problem is lack of tools (and personal lack of motivation oops) SO this coming fall I’ll be trying to get back on the YouTube grind! Your videos have been almost a constant background noise as I’m at work, you’ve had a lot of great insight into being an artist who, ya know, has to live and make money. Thanks so much!
I too feel the same way about Instagram…^___^ I hope to start making YouTube videos not just about being an artist for the past 31 years…^_____^ There’s so many stories I want to share with the YouTube world…^____^
The evergreen thing is so nice. I am tired a lot posting EVERYWHERE!
OMG really this is a day I am starting a yt channel and don't put so much attention to instagram account, you gave me hope girl <3
Hey Kelsey, thanks for sharing this. I personally did alright on Instagram back in 2015 but it's definitely gone downhill recently. I haven't grown much since they've been trying to be TikTok. I totally agree with you criticisms of IG tho. I was pretty casual in posting as I was in the military. I've been doing some YouTube but I can't say I've had much success. Though I could definitely improve my YouTube content. I would say Instagram is still an alright landing page but best to use it to link out to other content. I don't really see it as either/or. But I don't fault you for leaving either. I would say there is a huge market for a social media app exclusively for visual artists right now.
I see you're back on IG. What made you start using it again?
I must agree that YouTube encourages quality content than IG. IG only prioritizes the latest posts and these end up being ignored after days. Content on YT have a longer lifespan that even a 10-year-old content would come up from time to time! 😂
